Culturally Responsive Array Modeling

Grade level: 4th & 5th

A lesson for combining language arts and math. Using the story “Cassie’s Word Quilt” by Faith Ringgold, help learners unpack concepts around multiplication and arrays.

Learning Objectives

  • Utilize an array model to represent a multiplication problem

  • Estimate the size of a product and use this estimation to determine the reasonableness of a calculation

  • Use multiple strategies to find the product of two two-digit numbers
